Responsibilities and Duties of CNAs

Among the tasks required of a CNA is to facilitate the daily activities of residents of nursing homes.

After becoming aware of the important qualities and attributes required for a professional CNA, it is essential to look into the specific tasks that all CNAs will have to deal with in the course of their profession. Some of the tasks that are normally handled by CNAs in different healthcare locations are as follows:

  • Regulation of Infection – Standard procedures should be followed by all members of a health care team in order to regulate the spread of microorganisms in a medical facility. A CNA professional should be aware of the current practices in reducing the spread of microorganisms that cause diseases through continued education programs. Infection can also be regulated by the proper disposal of dirty items such as linen and frequent hand-washing.
  • Personal Cleanliness – This task involves the washing and bathing of patients including assisting them in showering whenever necessary. Helping patients in their grooming like nail-trimming and hair brushing are essential components in the proper hygiene of the patients. It may also be necessary to assist patients when they get dressed for the day.
  • Giving Treatments – CNA professionals work with a number of medical devices that include bedpans, pneumatic compression equipment, bladder scanners, and anti-embolism stockings, among others. They may also facilitate the treatment of the patient like massaging them.
  • Nutritional Needs – One of the responsibilities of CNAs is to provide sufficient nutrition for the patients. Although a number of patients can eat by themselves, some may need assistance during mealtimes. It may also be necessary for the CNA to be record the food that they eat along with the quantity to maintain the proper nutrition of the patient.
  • Reports – Since a CNA is in direct daily contact with the patient, they are considered important members of the healthcare team of the patient. Due to this, the observations of the CNA are important in the healthcare plan of the patient. The CNA should maintain a record of the health status of the patient, including the intake, output, and vital signs in addition to other similar relevant observations. These observations should be communicated to the CNAs of the other shifts, the Charge Nurses, and the Registered Nurse staff members.
  • Emotional Support – CNAs should not only focus on the physical care of the patients since these patients also require emotional support. The daily routine of the CNA indicates that they have a significant amount of interaction with the patients. The CNAs have a better idea of the anxieties, apprehensions, and moods of the patients. This makes CNAs good liaisons between the medical staff and the patients themselves when it comes to the needs of the patients. Moreover, when CNAs pay attention to and advise the patients, they may alleviate some of the anxieties and daily concerns of the patients.

It takes more than just training to become a CNA

A complete healthcare team immensely benefits from the presence of certified nursing assistants who play important functions in a variety of medical situations. Long-term care institutions, hospitals, community care institutions, and nursing homes have CNAs working for them. CNAs also work at the homes of patients as health assistants. Most of the tasks of CNAs are similar although the institution or workplace determines the tasks required from a CNA.

It is important to be aware of the basic personal characteristics needed by a CNA in order to recognize the nature of their job. Primarily, the work of a CNA focuses on the basic notion that they need to provide the best possible care for the patients. This basic notion will ultimately succeed when it is founded on the fundamental attributes of Compassion, Care, and Empathy.

  • Compassion is the sympathetic feeling you have for someone who is experiencing grief or has a medical condition. Although you may not be able to fully comprehend the entire situation, it is important for to exert effort in order to have compassion included into the care program.
  • It is essential for healthcare professionals to offer the best possible care that they were trained for to their patients at any given situation. This particular concept requires the healthcare professional to be aware of the needs of the patient. If you are aware of the situation of the patients, you will be able to fully comprehend the situation and deal with their apprehensions and needs.
  • Empathy is a characteristic that is closely related to compassion. However, it brings this emotion to the next level since a higher level of awareness for the concerns and needs of the patients is needed. You may have to put yourself in the situation of patient in order to demonstrate empathy. For instance, how would you want the CNA to treat you if you are experiencing pain, an illness or anxiety?

Things To Consider

The job of a CNA requires similar responsibilities in most locations although these tasks have the tendency to have some minor differences in some situations. For instance, it may be necessary for you to have more responsibilities if you are in a hospital, which is dependent on the floor you are assigned.

On the other hand, a CNA assigned as a home-health assistant may have a number of other responsibilities that are not connected to health, like food preparation and household duties.

Although the location may determine a number of these responsibilities, it is essential to keep in mind that you should put into practice the traditional personal traits of a professional CNA of compassion, care, and empathy.

There is also a choice of whether you would like to take the training and certification through the traditional classroom setting or if you would like to take it online at home.  If you have decided to take the training and certification online you would first need to enroll in an accredited program online. Remember that you have to make sure that the program you are enrolling into is accredited by recognized organizations and bodies. For patients, going through a few nights in the hospital can be one of the hardest experiences that someone can go through. To be able to overcome these circumstances, patients need compassionate, caring, helpful and optimistic individuals to help them through their health problems and their healing. But not everyone can have all of these traits, especially in the intense demands of medical field. Only a handful of individuals, such as nurses and CNAs, can handle the pressures of their work while still being loving and empathic toward their patients. With these traits, they can have a long and successful career in the medical industry.

If anyone would like to have a career in the medical field as a nurse, the first step that they would have to do is to take a CNA training course. These classes would be of great help, and will only require a short period of time. They truly provide their students with the right skills and information to be able to work effectively in the hospital, and to care for their patients in the best way that they can. After completing these classes, an aspiring CNA can already search for employment options in the medical field so that they can be able to apply the knowledge and proficiency that they have learned to help others who are in need.

The Salary

Of course, part of choosing a job would be the salary! The pay of a CNA can vary, depending on the area where you are employed, and the kind of health center that you work for, among others. If you choose to work in a rural area rather than in the city, then you would expect to receive a lower pay, as compared to the rate which you would have had in the city. If you choose to work in a small clinic rather than in a large hospital, then you would also receive a lower salary because of the limited number of patients that you would encounter each day.

If you would choose to work in a large hospital in the city, then you would receive a larger salary, but you would also have to work hard for your job. You would have to work hard though in whatever job you would choose, but the demands of a large hospital in a large city are very different. You may feel exhausted and extremely busy through your shifts, making it hard for you to give your utmost care to every patient that you will encounter.

Choosing a large city may give you the opportunity to earn more, but if you live in a rural area, the commute may be expensive and tiring for you. If you would consider the option of relocating in the city, then you should also take caution because it is more dangerous in the city than in the rural areas. At the end of the day, it is not important where you would use your CNA training, but how you use it, and if you can use it to help others in times of their need, while also taking care of yourself and keeping yourself safe from harm.

That is why it is important to have hard work and dedication for these kinds of courses.

The cost of a CNA certification course is relatively affordable, as compared to other health-related courses. A four to six week course would range from $500 to $1,000. Online courses are cheaper, especially for students since transportation costs would not need to be incurred. Scholarships from schools are also available for students, as well as third-party sponsorships and financial help from hospitals would also be available for students who would want to enroll CNA training.
